I’m
writing a feature looking at the use of cryptocurrency as a payment method,
looking at adoption and which companies / countries are leading the way. A few
weeks ago Tisséo, which runs public transport in the French city of Toulouse,
became the first city in Europe to allow payment for travel using
cryptocurrency. The Paris department store Printemps has also started accepting
cryptocurrency for payments in an attempt to woo international customers and
remain relevant. I’m looking for comments I can use in the article from experts
in cryptocurrency. With 18 per cent of the French population holding
cryptocurrency, how many people do you estimate will use Tisséo’s offer to pay
with cryptocurrency? How and when will this number grow? How soon will paying
for goods and services with crypto be as normal as paying with contactless? What
are some of the potential risks involved with introducing crypto as a payment
method for both merchants and customers? Are certain industries such as public
transport more suitable for payment with crypto? What are some of the
implications for retailers and customers – how will they deal with fluctuations
in exchange rates? Do holders of crypto actually want to spend it instead of
euros? Is the tide turning from seeing crypto as an investment which will grow
in value to seeing it as money? What are some of the barriers and risks for
merchants wanting to implement pay with crypto? How can they overcome them?
